Trios 2018
Posted by Paul Mathieson on 5 September 2018
The ever popular Trios will take place this year between the 24th and 26th of October. For this of you who particpated last year, you will remember we trailed a new format where players of the same rank in each team would play each other, rather than everyone playing everyone. It seems to work well so we'll go ahead and do the same again this year!
We'll be putting an entry sheet up on the notice board soon!
The format went something like this:
Each team will consist of 3 players ranked 1, 2, & 3 as normal.
Each group will consist of 4 teams who will play each other on a round robin basis, so every team has 3 matches to complete on either Wednesday or Thursday, depending on the draw. The winner and runner up in each group will go on to compete in the final on Friday.

Each match will be a 1 game match with a twist, each game will be played to 51 points, with players of the same rank playing each other in the order 3 v 3, 2 v 2, 1 v 1. Player changes will be triggered when one player reach the score of 17 then 34 and finally the game will be complete when one of the #1 players reaches 51. (No setting).
Example match:
Team 1 player #3 Vs Team 3 player #3 = 17 - 5 Team 1 player #2 Vs Team 3 player #2 = 34 - 25 Team 1 player #1 Vs Team 3 player #1 = 40 - 51 |
So while team 1 won the first two sections of the match, Team 3 ended up winning overall as the #1 was able to overcome a 9 point deficit to win the match by 11 points. It's down to the #3 and #2 to put your #1 in a good position to win the match. So while it's possible to come from behind, it will take a lot of effort so might knacker them for the next game!
After all matches have been completed in the group the top two teams will go through to the final on Friday. The group position will be determined by points difference not matches won, so every point counts!

Ties
If two teams are tied on overall points difference then the match between the two teams will be used to determine the group position. In the unlikely event that match was also tied on points then we will use the result of #3 vs #3 to determine the winner.
Team Size Exceptions
If we have more than 24 players, then some teams will have 4 players. If this happens then the team captain (the #1) must choose which 3 players play in each game. Players can be rotated at any time, even within a match.
Cost
Cost is £9 per team per evening played. Captains to collect money from the team.
Player Ranking
Each player has been ranked #1, #2 or #3 based roughly on ability by the tournament organiser. Please be aware however that it’s unlikely this will work out perfectly with 8 in each category. We will have some #1 players playing in position #2 but will try to balance the teams overall to account for this.
